History is usually read from the direction in which events actually happened.

Germany surrendered in May 1945. The Allied powers occupied Germany. The Soviet Union emerged from the war with enormous influence across Eastern Europe. The United States and Britain became central architects of the postwar international system.

This book asks a different question:

What if the result had been reversed?

Not for one battle.

Not for one month.

For the entire war.

What if Germany had avoided defeat, the Soviet Union had collapsed, Britain had lost its ability to continue the war, and the United States had been forced into a radically different settlement?

What would the world eventually become?

What would children learn at school?

Which generals would become heroes?

Which battles would become national holidays?

Which monuments would stand in the capitals?

Which countries would disappear from political vocabulary?

And, perhaps most importantly:

What would ordinary people believe had always been normal?

The first part of this book deals with the historical world that actually existed.

The second part becomes a fictional reconstruction.

The alternate timeline is not presented as a prediction. It is a thought experiment.

Once the alternate victory occurs, the world of the book does not remain permanently shocked by it. Generations are born into the new order. Institutions develop around it. Families build ordinary lives inside it.

That is the point.

A historical order becomes most powerful when people no longer remember that it was once new.
