To understand why a unit of Armenians ended up fighting under a German flag in 1942, you have to go back almost thirty years, to a spring morning in Constantinople when Ottoman authorities began arresting Armenian intellectuals, clergy, and community leaders. What followed over the next several years was the systematic destruction of the Ottoman Empire’s Armenian population — deportations into the Syrian desert, mass killings, starvation marches. Estimates of the dead range from roughly 664,000 to 1.5 million, with most serious historians settling somewhere around 1 to 1.2 million. The Armenian nation that emerged from 1923 was not a nation in a place; it was a nation scattered across the Caucasus, the Middle East, Europe, and eventually the Americas.

This matters for our story in a very specific way. Nearly every figure who appears later in this book — Garegin Nzhdeh, Drastamat Kanayan, the rank-and-file soldiers who filled the Legion’s ranks — was shaped by this event, either as a direct survivor or as someone raised in its shadow. Statelessness became, for a generation of Armenians, not an abstraction but a lived condition. And for a certain kind of political mind, it produced an urgent, sometimes desperate calculus: any power willing to help restore a homeland was a power worth talking to, regardless of what else that power believed or did.
