RigStudio Skeleton Library adds a ready-made skeleton library to Blender's sidebar. Instead of building an armature bone by bone, you pick one of 200 skeletons, press one button, and it is created in your scene. Then you fit it to your mesh and bind it.
IMPORTANT: this add-on gives you skeletons (bones and hierarchy). It is NOT an automatic rigging system. It does not create IK/FK controls, and the skin weights come from Blender's own Automatic Weights. You will still adjust bones and weights to fit your model.
WHAT YOU GET
200 skeletons in 11 categories:
- Humans (10)
- Mammals (40)
- Birds (15)
- Reptiles (20)
- Insects (15)
- Marine (15)
- Robots (15)
- Vehicles (12)
- Fantasy creatures (25)
- Monsters (8)
- Rig parts (25)
Each skeleton has a proper parent hierarchy and left/right (.L / .R) bone names. Every skeleton was checked for missing parents, duplicate names and mirrored symmetry.
FEATURES
- Create a skeleton with one click ("Create Skeleton")
- Search all skeletons by name, or filter by category
- Scale: size multiplier for the new skeleton
- Fit to selected mesh height: scales and places the skeleton to match the mesh you have selected
- X-Axis Mirror: turned on for the new skeleton, so editing one side edits the other
- Show in front: bones stay visible through the mesh
- Bind (Automatic Weights): select your mesh, then the skeleton, and bind from the same panel
- Library Manager: save your own armatures into the library, reload the library, delete skeletons, and open the library folder
HOW TO USE
1. Press N in the 3D viewport and open the RigStudio tab.
2. Choose a category and a skeleton (or use Search).
3. (Optional) Select your mesh and turn on "Fit to selected mesh height".
4. Click "Create Skeleton".
5. Adjust the bones in Edit Mode if needed.
6. Select your mesh, then the skeleton, and click "Bind (Automatic Weights)".
COMPATIBILITY
Tested in practice:
- Blender 2.93 LTS on Windows: installing, enabling, creating skeletons and binding to a mesh all work.
Not yet tested in practice (the code was reviewed for these versions, but I have not run it on them):
- Blender 3.x
- Blender 4.0 and newer, including 4.2+ and the latest release
The add-on only uses standard Blender API calls that exist in 2.93 and newer, and it avoids features that were removed in Blender 4.0 (for example bone layers). If you run into a problem on one of these versions, send me the error message and the Blender version through Getly and I will fix it.
Not supported:
- Blender 2.92 and older
Installation on Blender 4.2 or newer: Edit > Preferences > Add-ons > arrow menu (top right) > Install from Disk. This add-on is a regular (legacy) add-on, so Blender may show a notice about it.
KNOWN LIMITATIONS
- Skeletons are templates. You will usually need to adjust bone positions to match your model (the "Fit to selected mesh height" option only scales and places the skeleton, it does not fit each joint).
- Automatic Weights can fail on some meshes (for example meshes with holes, loose parts or overlapping geometry). In that case, clean the mesh and try again, or paint the weights by hand.
- No IK/FK controls and no automatic weight correction.
INSTALLATION
1. Download the .zip file. Do not unzip it.
2. Blender: Edit > Preferences > Add-ons > Install... > select the .zip
3. Tick the box next to "RigStudio Skeleton Library".
4. If you installed an older version before: remove it, close Blender completely, open it again, then install the new one.
WHAT'S IN THE ZIP
- The add-on (Python files)
- The library: 200 skeleton files (.json) in 11 category folders
- README with installation notes
