Before you knew the meaning of money, you could fear losing it.

Before you understood reputation, you could fear embarrassment.

Before you understood death, you could fear it.

Fear arrives early.

It does not always arrive as a monster.

Sometimes it arrives as a warning.

Don’t touch that.

Don’t say that.

Don’t embarrass yourself.

Don’t fail.

Don’t disappoint them.

Don’t be different.

Be careful.

Be normal.

Be successful.

Be safe.

Little by little, the human being learns what must be protected.

A reputation.

A body.

A family.

A relationship.

A house.

A bank account.

A position.

A belief.

An identity.

And eventually, life itself.

We spend enormous amounts of energy protecting things from being taken away.

But there is a question we rarely ask:

Were these things ever truly ours?

This book begins with that question.

Fear appears to have thousands of faces.

But perhaps beneath all of them is one simple mechanism:

the fear of losing something.

Fear of humiliation is the fear of losing your image.

Fear of rejection is the fear of losing belonging.

Fear of poverty is the fear of losing security.

Fear of aging is the fear of losing youth.

Fear of illness is the fear of losing health.

Fear of heartbreak is the fear of losing someone.

Fear of death is the fear of losing everything.

And perhaps the illusion becomes visible when we understand one simple idea:

Nothing really belongs to you.

It is only your time with it.
