A printable coloring book is one of the simplest digital purchases there is: you pay, download a PDF and print the pages you want, as many times as you want. That simplicity hides real differences in quality. Line weight decides whether markers bleed into the next shape, page size decides whether your printer crops the border, and the number of truly different designs decides whether you get thirty evenings or thirty copies of the same mandala. Here is how to choose an adult coloring book PDF in 2026, and a few worth opening.
The shelf, measured
We measured the digital coloring books and coloring pages shelves on Getly on 29 October 2026: 241 active listings, for adults and for children.
- Price: the median paid listing costs $3.50. A quarter cost $2.00 or less, three quarters $4.99 or less. 2.9% are free.
- Format: 87.1% of listings ship a PDF, 7.5% a .zip (often PNG or JPG pages) and 3.7% loose PNG files.
- Length: among the PDFs, the median book has 23 pages; a quarter have 12 or fewer and a quarter 40 or more.
- Licence: 52.7% of listings state a licence on the product page. Of those, 73.2% are personal use only and 23.6% allow commercial use.
That last point matters if you teach a class, run a care home activity or want to sell finished pages: most coloring books are for your own use, and a licence that says so is the honest default.
What makes an adult coloring book good
Line weight and detail you can actually color
Adult books split into two families. Detailed designs (mandalas, botanicals, zentangle) reward fine liners and coloured pencils. Bold and easy designs use thick outlines and large shapes, which suit alcohol markers, tired eyes and short sessions. Neither is better; pick by the tools on your desk. Zoom into the preview images: if the lines look thin and grey on screen, they will print faint.
One design per page, printed single-sided
Markers bleed through paper. Good books place each design on its own page with nothing on the back when printed, and many add a "test your colours" page. If you print at home, print single-sided on heavier paper (around 120 to 160 g/m2) or cardstock.
The right paper size
Europe prints on A4, North America on US Letter. A design laid out for one gets cropped or shrunk on the other. The Mandala Coloring Book for Adults solves this properly: two PDFs, one A4 and one Letter, each 32 pages. The same goes for single pages like the Coastal Coloring Page with a lighthouse and dunes, which comes in both sizes.
Real variety
Thirty pages are worth more than sixty if the sixty are mirrored and rotated versions of ten designs. Look at the preview images and the description: does it describe different scenes, or only repeat the page count?
Five to look at
- Mandala Coloring Book for Adults, 30 printable pages: A4 and Letter versions, fonts embedded so the cover and notes print identically everywhere.
- Mushroom Coloring Book, 19 printable pages: cottagecore forest scenes, a single 20-page PDF in A4 (the seller offers Letter on request, so if you print on Letter, ask before you buy).
- Mandala Coloring Book: 50 hand-drawn designs: a 51-page PDF of mandalas for long, detailed sessions. The licence is not stated on the page, so treat it as personal use.
- Positive Affirmations Stress-Free Coloring Book: a long book, 82 pages, pairing short affirmations with designs.
- Coastal Coloring Page: one calm design, when you want an evening rather than a book.
Use the product page before you pay
On Getly a PDF listing tells you more than a cover. Under the price you see the total file size and the format; for PDFs the page shows the number of pages and whether fonts are embedded. Books of 10 pages or more usually get a "Look inside" link that opens a real excerpt of the first pages in your browser, never more than a small share of the book. The description tab lists every file, so you can see whether you get A4, Letter or both. The FAQ at the bottom of the page states the licence in plain words and the store's refund window, never less than 30 days.
One small trap we noticed while checking: when a book ships the same pages twice, as A4 and as Letter, the page count shown adds both files together. The mandala book above reads "64 pages" because it is 32 pages in each size. Read the file list and the "Look inside" line, which shows the real length of one file.
Red flags
- A single cover image and no page previews at all.
- A page count far above the number of different designs described.
- Low-resolution pages: a coloring page needs crisp lines at print size. PNG or JPG pages should be at least 2400 pixels on the long side for an A4 or Letter print at 300 DPI.
- Characters from films, games or brands you know. Selling those is a rights problem for the seller and the listing may disappear.
Getting your book
Pay by card or with USDT/USDC; no account needed. The receipt lists each file with its own link, and the book stays in your library so you can print it again next year. If the PDF is broken or not as described, request a refund from your order and the Getly team reviews it. For more choice, browse digital coloring books and pick by line weight and paper size first, theme second.
