Stems are the most misunderstood deliverable in music. Sometimes you need them, sometimes you are paying for files you will never open. Here is how to tell.
What stems actually are
Separate audio files for each element of the beat — drums, bass, melody, and so on — exported so an engineer can mix them individually. They are not the same as the master.
When you need them
If a mix engineer will touch the beat, if the song is being mastered properly, or if a label asks for the session. For a straight vocal-over-beat release, you usually do not.
When they are a waste
A demo, a rough reference, or any release you are mixing yourself with the beat as one file. Buy the tier the job needs.
How to ask for them
Name the format and the sample rate, and say what you are mixing to. A producer who knows the destination delivers the right files first time.
