Most Midjourney portraits look flat because the prompt stops at the subject. Image quality comes from nine decisions stacked around it, in a fixed order, every time.
1. Shot and framing first
Start with what the camera sees: close-up, medium shot, low angle, dutch tilt. Leave framing out and the model guesses, and the guess is usually a boring eye-level headshot.
2. Lighting is the mood
Rembrandt key light, hard noon sun, window light with deep falloff, neon rim from behind. One lighting choice changes the emotion more than any adjective you add later.
3. Lens and distance
85mm at f/1.4 compresses the face and melts the background. 35mm at f/8 keeps the environment honest. Say the focal length instead of writing the word cinematic and hoping.
4. Film stock and grade
Kodak Portra 400 for warm skin, CineStill 800T for tungsten halation, Fuji Pro 400H for cool greens. This is what makes an image feel photographed rather than rendered.
5. Skin and texture honesty
Say real skin texture, visible pores, fine film grain. Skip it and you get the plastic sheen that instantly reads as AI.
6. Colour palette
Two or three named colours: teal and amber, bone white and rust, desaturated olive. Naming the palette stops the model from inventing its own.
7. Background and depth
An out-of-focus city street, a concrete wall, a studio seamless. Give the background a job.
8. Negative prompt
No extra fingers, no smeared eyes, no watermark, no oversmoothing. Thirty seconds here saves the whole render.
9. Consistent character block
Reuse the same identity, lens and grade across a set. That is what turns one good image into a coherent series.
